Monthly Prep Thread November '08

November already. Wow. The elections are looming, and the economy is teetering on the brink of collapse.

So what's going to happen? I don't know, but I'll continue to prep for all contingencies and hope for the best.

Added some more M855 to the stash. Still haven't purchased another genny yet, but that will probably come after the first of the year. Plussed up the canned veggies with a couple of flats and acquired some AA batteries.

Christmas may be a bit lean this year. We've made the decision not to put any purchases on credit, so we'll see how that goes.

How about y'all?

We're stocked to the gills on food, firewood, garden seeds, and chickens. I'm still compulsively sawing firewood though.

Notable deficiencies are water storage, fuel, and contingency plans.

I need to quit with the firewood and do what's more important. Water? Hello, idiot? Anyone in there? :thumb.aspx:

The weather has just been so nice though (60s and 70s daily for at least a week), it is very difficult to stay inside and do anything more cerebral than GIMing.

Adding to the battery bank here. 20 Kilowatt hours storage capacity in use at present, I have 6 more batteries to bring online, first need to build another battery rack/box.
We got 5 good hours of solar power today, enough to run everything and fully charge the batteries.

Fullpower: How many and what size batteries do you have in your bank ? Is there a mix of different sizes or all the same ? I've read somewhere, I think, that the bank should be all the same....and mixing older and newer batteries isn't a good idea....you find that makes any difference ?

How are you figuring your 20kw amount....what depth of discharge ?

Thanks.....I have a bank of 8 8L16's 400amp/hr rated batteries, and am trying to figure what my draw down will be ( these are backup for a grid tied system ).

FIREWOOD! I'm pushing the supply into the 2010 season, plus my fence line gets cleaned up and lets more sun into the garden.

Cash on hand allowed us to purchase some personel protection equipment from a close friend "in need".

Purchased bagged/clean/sterile potting soil from the local feed store for 50 cents a bag for next years plant starts in the new greenhouse and garden.

Filled some stray 5 gal. gas cans with 2 buck gas/Stabil.
Good luck folks

I am also getting ready to make 5 gallons of pumpkin wine, from the pumpkins I scavenged from behind the supermarket. There were probably 2 tons of pumpkins being trashed.

So far, laid in some more canned goods. Have been using the sales and coupons to stock up on foods we use and we can keep. Mostly canned vegetables, canned cream soups, and canned broths.

Also trading a Baer 1911 for a Contender pistol with three ten-inch barrels (hunting versatility in .22 LR, .223 Rem, and .44 Magnum), a Nikon scope, a Ruger Super-Six with both .22 LR and .22 WMR cylinders, and some cash destined for more preps. Gonna miss the 1911, but I have lots of 1911s and this one was not getting shot.

Need to refill propane tank, stock up on some more canned goods, can some jellies and stew, and get me two deer for the freezer.
